Pilates is a total body and mind conditioning programme designed to help you move well, stand tall and get the very best out of your body. Its creator, Joseph Pilates, believed the mind builds the body and he developed a technique which refreshes mentally as it conditions physically.

Pilates targets core postural muscles to keep your body balanced and your spine supported. It works by building strength from the inside out, rebalancing the body and bringing it into correct alignment. It teaches your body to give up any bad habits and trains you to move and breathe more efficiently.

This is a form of exercise that:

  • Strengthens and lengthens muscles

  • Improves posture

  • Relaxes the mind

  • Rehabilitates after injury or during illness

The programme’s eight basic principles are relaxation, concentration, alignment, breathing, centring, co-ordination, flowing movements and stamina.
